Insects

Between 1878 and 1947, Thomas Edison, Isaac Asimov, and Grace Hopper all proclaimed various references to small faults, unanticipated annoyances, and challenging problems to be “bugs”. This term now links two of the worlds most prolific and complex entities: insects and computers.

Beetles #

These interesting specimens are likely examples of the Ribbed Pine Borer entering their adult phase of development. Each beetle can be seen underneath the surface of the wood in what appears to be a nest made from the surrounding wood fibers.

Caterpillars #

The “woolly bear” caterpillar is one of the common names used to refer to the larvae of the Isabella tiger moth.

Ladybugs #

This ladybug is attempting to eat polyester fiber from a spider-web halloween decoration.

Wasps #

This wasp appears to be a species sometimes referred to as the “Eastern cicada killer”. This specimen measured approximately 2 inches in length.

Three-striped Potato Beetles #

The larvae of the Three-striped Potato Beetle commonly cause damage to garden plants such as tomatillos. The larvae cover themselves with their excrement, likely as camouflage and a deterrent to predators.
